Universal Search is a feature that Google has been implementing gradually for the past couple of years.

Basically, it’s where Google adds extra stuff to the search results. This could be images (from Google Image Search), news stories or press releases (from Google News), videos (from Youtube) or local search results (from Google Local and Google Maps).

So it’s obvious that being higher in the search engine results is better, right?

But exactly how much difference does it make?

Surely as long as you’re on page one or two you’re fine, right?

WRONG!

In fact over 40% of people click on the FIRST result. Yes that’s right… nearly half of all clicks are on the first listing!

So if you’re showing up half way down the page, how many people do you think are going to click on your website and visit? Not many.

This is what I’ve been trying to hammer home to website owners for YEARS! In Google in particular (and let’s face it, Google is the most popular search engine by far) it’s ALL about the top 3 spots.

So how important do you think Search Engine Optimization is now?

If you could make a few tweaks to your site that pushed you up from position 4 to position 1, would it be worth it? You bet!

It could even be the difference between the success and failure of your site… or your business!
